STATEMENT OF HEALTH MINISTER FAHRETTIN KOCA ON SMA TREATMENTS

Health Minister Dr. Fahrettin Koca 'SMA Scientific Committee Members, Ministry officials and SMA associations attended the' Current Treatments in SMA Disease Workshop 'by our Ministry. The SMA Scientific Committee touched on current scientific studies on SMA drugs and possible gene therapy that has been on the agenda recently.

The SMA Scientific Committee stated that the claims that the disease does not have a cure and that she will die if she does not receive gene therapy until the age of 2 is unfounded. SMA patients whose application process is completed still benefit from the treatment that is known to be efficacy and side effects and which is successfully applied in our country.

As part of the gene therapy application procedure, the immune system needs to be suppressed for at least 1 month, especially in some patients with high weight, this process may take up to 1 year.
